REM Sleep may change gene expression:
help brain development in babies
more then previously thought.

My Story:

I was lucky my first born sleep like a rock from the very first day I brought her home she sleep 6 hours straight at night. Never less, unless she was ill.

I knew the sleep pattern was good for her growing body and mind. I just didn't know how good.

Increased REM sleep for babies may be key for brain and body development:

Babies sleep, baby birds, baby humans, they all sleep.  Human and birds are very similar in sleep patterns. A new study (1) took a look at how much and what effect sleep patterns had on owlets. The stimulating new information showed that REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep) which has the similar activity in the brain as if the person was awake and yet fast asleep. Infant humans spend about 50% of their sleep in REM sleep while adults only spend about 25% in REM Sleep.

The researchers looked into a connection with REM and other body functions finding there was a connection between a gene responsible for producing dark feathers (which is also controls production in thyroid and insulin hormones) and the amount of REM sleep. One of the researcher suggested that there was a difference in brain development.

Final words:

Sleep is something every parent wants for their baby. Now it seems like it is much more important then previously thought possibly affecting the brain development and body. It seems in this modern society I see babies and kids of all ages out and about at all hours of the day or night. 40 years ago it seems in the US it was a rare event to see kids out past 10 pm. The reality is children are developing every minute of their childhood.

If a child isn't getting enough REM sleep will this affect them for the rest of their life. At this point we may not have direct proof, but it may not be a far leap to say it may have a large negative effect on the a child into adulthood.

The question I have does the REM sleep have a large positive effect on adults? Sleep seems to avoid many in modern society.  The best solution is to keep sleep as a goal to have a chance to obtain the REM state.

One of the most interesting side effects for me was when I became healthier I seem to sleep better over all.

One less is wining: Teens avoiding HPV by 56% over the last 7 years The war is not over yet for our boys and girls. ~ Cynthia G. Creel 8-3-2013

One less is wining:
Teens avoiding HPV by 56% over the last 7 years
The war is not over yet for our boys and girls.

My story:

As I walked in to the high school room to help out I looked around and odds are part of teens in this class is having sex already. Which ones? They knew who they were. Would they talk to me, most likely or maybe not any adult. Odds would say some could be infected by the human Papilomavirus (HPV)

This is a war to be waged  against  the HPV which may cause cervical cancer taking the live of women around the world.

HPV vaccine:

According to the CDC news room (1) A new study in the June isue of The Journal of Infectious Disease showed a decrease by 56%  in female teenagers 14 - 19 years old of age infected by HPV since the vaccine was first out in 2006. Around 79 million Americans, most young between late teens to early twenties are currently infected by HPV with about 17 million new cases each year. With 19,000 cancers caused by HPV with cervical cancer most often.  Men are also dealing with around 8,000 cancers with oropharyngeal (throat) cancers caused the most common by HPV in the United States.

The press release quoted CDC Director Tom Frieden M.D., M.P.H dsuomh., “Unfortunately only one third of girls aged 13-17 have been fully vaccinated with HPV vaccine.  Countries such as Rwanda have vaccinated more than 80 percent of their teen girls. Our low vaccination rates represent 50,000 preventable tragedies – 50,000 girls alive today will develop cervical cancer over their lifetime that would have been prevented if we reach 80 percent vaccination rates.  For every year we delay in doing so, another 4,400 girls will develop cervical cancer in their lifetimes.”

Usually vaccination start at age 11-12 for both males and females. How ever only about half the girls in the U.S. Routine vaccination at age 11-12 for both boys and girls is recommended, but according to recent national immunization surveys, only about half of all girls in the U.S.—and far fewer boys—received the first dose of HPV vaccine. A series of three shots is recommended over six months.  HPV vaccination is also recommended for older teens and young adults who were not vaccinated when younger.

Vaccine can start at age 11:

There is a choice for every child and their parent for the child to get vaccinated. Some parents are against vaccines. There is always risk to every act we take. The question I asked which was worse some protection or no protect with a possible death sentence? Each of us will have to decide for ourselves which is the best choice.

It’s not about sex:

This health crises for our young is not about sex. It’s about protecting and saving lives. Some teens and young adults will have sex, some won’t if no one has the HPV no one can pass it on to another. As a parent it wasn’t about giving permission for sex is was just about protecting from warts that can cause cancer. The fewer people who have been infected the less likely a person will be infected.

Final words:

Protect enough of the population around the world and potentially a virus can be eliminated altogether. Eliminating one more cause of cancer helps save lives and avoid the cost, pain and devastation it may cause in the long run. This is not a female or male challenge, this is everyone’s problem to help solve. Together we can solve this challenge, prevent pain and suffering saving lives and increasing the productivity of society with one less challenge to think about and solve.

AMA vote for energy drinks band for under 18: Is too much caffeine putting our adolescents at risk for heat problems? 20,000 emergency room visits ~ Cynthia G. Creel 8-1-2013

AMA vote for energy drinks band for under 18:
Is too much caffeine putting  our adolescents
at risk for heat problems?
20,000 emergency room visits
~ Cynthia G. Creel

My Story:

My friends 16 year old daughter was lying on the ground unable to get up, her heart was racing. She had not done any exercise, she had drank an energy drink. This all led to a trip to the doctor’s to find out she had reacted to something in the energy drink. Could it have been the quick absorption of  caffeine?

I do know my friend was scared that she would loose her daughter, my friend’s daughter felt like she was going to die and I thought this shouldn’t be happening to a young person not even into  her 20’s yet.

It seems teens and adults are looking for something to pep them up and getting more then they bargain  for,

Is it time to ban energy drinks to the underage for adolescents?

American Medical Association’s (1) is for a band  on energy Drink for adolescents:

“Stimulant drinks have surged in popularity in recent years, especially among high school and college students, and health advocates are concerned about the use of these drinks among adolescents due to excessive amounts of caffeine. The FDA is continuing to investigate reports of illness, injury or death of people who drank products marketed as “energy drinks” or “energy shots.” The AMA today adopted policy supporting a ban of the marketing of high stimulant/caffeine drinks to adolescents under the age of 18.
“Energy drinks contain massive and excessive amounts of caffeine that may lead to a host of health problems in young people, including heart problems, and banning companies from marketing these products to adolescents is a common sense action that we can take to protect the health of American kids,” said AMA board member Alexander Ding, MD.”

New survey says emergency room visits from reactions  energy drinks has doubles from 2007:

The Daily Mail (2) repots on a government survey  show a possible connection between emergency room visits and drinking an energy drink doubled in the last 4 years to a whooping 20,000 visits.

Energy drink sales are up by 17 percent with the energy drink rage continuing in popularity. In 2011 over 40% of the patients also consumed  an energy drink in addiction to alcohol or drugs such as Adderall or Ritalin.  The article also quotes  Howard Mell, an emergency physician in the suburbs of Cleveland, who serves as a spokesman for the American College of Emergency Physicians saying “'A lot of people don't realize the strength of these things. I had someone come in recently who had drunk three energy drinks in an hour, which is the equivalent of 15 cups of coffee,”

Deaths reported  from enery drink:

According to WebMD (3) the FDA has 5 reports of death from the possible consumptions of energy drink.

Such as a 14 year old girl from Maryland, USA collapses after 14 ounce Monster Energy drink in 2 days. The report show a possible connection but doesn’t show proof that it is. Just a possible connection  sighting a caffeine poisoning as a factor. The FDA will consider all sources of caffeine before deterring cause of death.  With the drink also contain other stimulants like taurine and guarana.

The girls parents filed a lawsuit against Monster Energy  noting that Monster Energy doesn’t list the how many mg. of caffeine there is in one drink. Most likely the girl consumed two cans of energy drink with a possible 240 mg of caffeine exceeding the recommended portion for teen and child doses of  100 mg of caffeine per day. Adults should have less then 400 mg day.

Final words:

There are many limits for adolescents developing bodies and brains like consuming alcohol, drugs, driving, signing a contract. Understanding the adolescent is still developing judgment, experience and knowledge made them more likely  to  consuming too much caffeine in an energy drink with lower body weight that may increase the  effect.

Just like a pool barrier helps prevent children from drowning, a ban for the under 18 group on direct sales of energy drinks would help deter accesses to a possibly  harmful drink. However, educating how dangers and easily it is to over dose from  too much caffeine and possibly other elements could be an immense help to protecting  the young.

If children are being negatively affected by the energy drinks there are most likely a negatively affecting adults. There are many reasons we become tired, lacking a super shot of  caffeine may not be the case.
