My Story:
I was at my friends house and one of the guests took out an electronic cigarette. I watched and noticed a vapor escaping his nostrils. At that moment I was only curious. What was this? I asked and was told it was a replacement for cigarettes. There was no talk about quitting the new form of cigarette, just stopping smoking and how much better this was for the smoker. The next thought was how is this so different for the guest to being around it?
Part of the answer was clear when another guest and I talked about how sensitive she was to the vapor. The vapor may be smokeless and yet it could mean invisible trouble for all those near the vapor that escapes into the air
Cigarettes ads banned in US since 1971:
I wasn’t old enough to stay up and see the last traditional cigarette (combustible) ad run. I was in bed way before 11:50 p.m. during The Johnny Carson Show aired on January 1, 1971 as documented by history.com (1) . I remember quite a few ads and if my parents hadn’t been telling me of the negative consequences from smoking I may have pick up a very bad habit. Most of the people we knew smoked. I could have easily started and yet never had the desire too. Maybe because most people told me they wish they hadn’t started.
Are people trading really bad for just plain bad?, combustible cigarettes for electronic cigarettes:
CBS news (2) reports on the new growing market for electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes. The industry is growing quickly with sales in the Untied States in 2011 of 300 million, 2012 of 600 million and is expected to rise to 1 billion in 2013. There is a lot of profit involved with large amounts of sales most likely. There is a lot of room to grow with traditional cigarette sales reaching sales in 2013 of 80 billion.
For the first time since 1971 cigarettes advertising in now returning to television in the form of an electronic cigarette made by NJOY aired by a cable networks. NJOY CEO Craig Weiss is hoping to “obsolete cigarettes” and sell e-cigarette with ads playing in prime time television. NJOY is the best selling with the vapor being inhaled mimicking smoking.
Weiss says e cigarettes are the “good guys” taking over the market eliminating the big bad tobacco industries cigarettes. There is a question if the e cigarette is safe. Some experts remain unconvinced with patients thinking this new form of cigarettes is “non toxic”.
The CBS report says:
“The Food and Drug Administration does not currently regulate e-cigarettes, therefore manufactures are not mandated to disclose the ingredients.”
The FDA also stated to CBS news, "Further research is needed to assess the potential public health benefits and risks of electronic cigarettes and other novel tobacco products."
List of ingredients for many e-cigarettes are: Nictone, water, artificial flavoring, glycerol, and propylene glycol, the ingredient that creates the exhaled imitation smoke.
Weiss tells CBS news (1) "I've got a three-year-old and a six-year-old. And, I want to grow up in a world where they can ask me one day, 'So, wait a second, dad. I don't understand. You used to little this thing on fire and then you put it in your mouth? I mean, how did that even work?'"
Weiss did not state that he would prefer his children not to smoke at all, traditions cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes only that he would prefer if giving his kids the choice between traditional cigarettes and e cigarettes, the e-cigarettes would be preferable. The jury may still be out on which is worse. However Weiess has a company to run and e-cigarettes to market.
American Lung Association’s fight against e-cigarettes to take them off the market:
In 2009 the American Lung Association made a press release (3) to try to encourage taking the e cigarettes off the market. Stating
“FDA officials have been quoted numerous times in many publications during the past few weeks saying that e-cigarettes are “new drugs,” which require prior approval from the FDA before they are allowed to be sold. Without this approval, e-cigarettes are illegal to market or sell. Despite these statements, no action has been taken to remove e-cigarettes from the market.”
With e-cigarettes being marketed towards kids thought the internet with fruit flavors. The press release continues and states the FDA (2009) currently didn’t have jurisdiction over tobacco products but has jurisdiction over products containing e-cigarettes.
CBS news (2) reports Erika Sward, of the American Lung Association stating:
"We are very concerned that there is literally no federal oversight of these products. We do not know what's in them. We do not know how they are being used," Sward explained.
"I would hope that e-cigarettes would ultimately not have the same god awful impact that regular tobacco products have had, but the jury is still out," she added.
United Kingdom classifying e-cigarettes as “medicines” Are regulations needed?:
The Guardian (5) reports in the United Kingdom e-cigarettes are to be clarified as “medicines” which would give more control over the sales of the e- cigarettes. the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has said doctors can prescribe to smokers to cut down or quit. In the UK there are approximately 1.3 million people that use cigarettes. Nicotine, as a vapor, is still absorbed into the body with the amount of nicotine varying from batch to batch . MHRA will over see the product so there is a consistency. E-cigarettes already sold would not be subject to the same regulations and to help prevent marketing to non-smokers and children.
It seems the UK has the right idea to help stabilize the product and who uses the product to help those who need it and limit exposure to others. .
Nicotine can be used as a pesticide and may be addictive.:
The Science Daily (6) repots that one use for nicotine is used as a pesticide. Tobacco has been used on a small scale as a natural organic pesticide over the hundreds of years. There is a new possibility nicotine can be processed using 900 degrees Fahrenheit to produce an unrefined bio-oil killing fungus and four bacteria, and the Colorado potato beetle. Once the nicotine is separated form the bio-oil, the bio oil is still affective against some pests. Nicotine may be more effective than other peptides
Besides insects who else might be effected by nicotine being absorbed into the body? If nicotine can kill insects and such will it have the same effect on us. Studies (7) have shown nicotine to be addictive with one study stating “The number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of smoking are positively related to the percentage with ”diagnosis of nicotine dependence.”
Final words:
There is no doubt that most people who smoke are addicted to the ciggarets Mamy are stuggling to escape. The e-cigarette may be one of the best option if there is a short term trade until a person is able to quit smoking regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Part of what I see as an ongoing problem the idea that the e-cigarettes are “non toxic” or safe for consumption. It may take years before we know the facts how harmful e-cigarettes may be. In the mean time the use of fruity flavored e-cigarettes may entice children and other non smokers to try e-cigarettes.. Would they become addicted to nicotine? Or would a smoker trying to quit regular cigarettes not worry about being on e cigarettes and stay on them for a lifetime not thinking there is any risk at all even if in the future there is direct evidence that e-cigarettes it puts a person at higher risk of health issues.
More studies need to be done to find out the long term effects of e cigarettes. I would hope no one would intend to use e cigarettes continually for life or extended periods of time and to only use it as a short term stop gap between smoking and becoming a non smoker. . Nicotine could be harmful and to think other wise may be a deadly mistake for some, not only for the user, but possible for those around exposed to second or third hand vapor. However it may turn out to be a good option for the short run. Only time will tell us if there are major negative effects from short term or long term use of e cigarettes.
Bravo for any one who as been able to quite smoking and good luck to anyone who wants to quit. A difficult battle to win, but not impossible.
