How many millions of people will die
 if the bees all die?

My Story:

I saw 4 bees today in the garden that was 4 times as many than yesterday. I know there can be more, but in comparison from this year to last it is 90% less. I have unpolluted flowers and beans. One farm does not demonstrate a serious problem, however the bee keepers know and see the deaths of their bees first hand. Now you see the bees flying around and now they are lifeless and there is a colony collapse. For now my farm is still producing today, but what about tomorrow?

38 millions of bees die from just one farm:

As reported by The Star (1) Ontario Beekeeper, David Schuit is blaming seed that produce a  pesticides themselves and or the use of neonicotinoid pesticides as a cause of almost 40 million bees dieing from the 600 hives that create his business of organic honey. Schuit also talks about the corn that produces a protein to kill insects, just one seed could kill an entire hive. One bee produces one tenth of a teaspoon of honey every 6 weeks.

Bees dying off each year 12 million in 2011 and 50,000 in a parking lot 2013:

The Daily Mail (1) reported in 2011 in Florida, United States that 12 million bees from 800 hives in Brevard County, on central Florida’s Atlantic Coast died.  Also from a previous article I wrote (3) suspected use of neonicotinoid pesticides killed over 50,000 bees in the parking lot of a local business in Oregon.

Bees dead today, people tomorrow?

With massive amounts of bees loosing there lives  from multiple causes may mean more then no honey for us today. The reality that may be created is the labor intensive method of hand pollination where a person takes a small brush and does what the bees do, goes from flower to flower spreading pollen creating our fruits, vegetables, nuts  and grains. The bees give us succulent honey and pollinate for free. There couldn’t be a better system. Just like a colony collapse where there are not enough bees performing all the jobs necessary to keep a hive viable will this happen to humans?

Some bees have died and in the future some people may die or millions could die if there is not enough food to go around. Just like the major disasters it take much to keep people alive and well, if we loose our bee’s it will be a disasters.  In most developed countries there is food enough for all. In third world countries there seems to never be enough food. The question I have if we don’t change our ways quickly will the world become equally needy for food and only some will survive?

Some ideas to solve:

Stop using pesticides or herbicides. On my farm I grow food without pesticides or herbicides, yes much more labor intensive and so much more delicious. Grow your own food and plant flowers for bees to collect  clean pollen safely.  Front yard, back yard, roof top all great places to grow.

Final words:

May people I talk to know the bees are in trouble, it is some vague problem for someone else. After all I can still buy honey at my local store here in the United States. How may bees will have to die, 1 billion? 2 Billion? 3 Billion? For us to change enough to keep the balance in the world. The bees pollinate and produce honey for us to enjoy.

The bees dying at the hands of farmers spraying or using products that kill any insect seems self defecting. Keep the crops pest free, kill the bees so expensive hand pollinations is required and inadequate inferior food is created.

Farmers and people I chat with agree as long as they don’t have to change. Everything we do to kill has a side affect. It is time to take action. To do what can be done to help the bees survive. After all once the bee is gone there is no way to create honey and  how would hand pollinating crops work? Not very well I believe. .

The bees should be our heroes we roll out the red carpet for not kill them by the millions. Every time a purchase is made of a product it will help the bees or hurt the bees. Keep it in mind when you buy a product it is more then just something you pick up, it represents much. It came from some where, was produced some how, created, transported and placed on a shelf or shipped directly to you.
