“Caffeine candy and gum: No child left behind, Not recommended for children or persons sensitive to caffeine. Does that mean everyone?” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 30, 2013

“Caffeine candy and gum:
No child left behind,
Not recommended for children
or persons sensitive to caffeine.
Does that mean everyone?”

~ Cynthia G. Creel

My story:

I never really liked jelly beans until Jelly Belly made them with real flavor. I could eat handfuls at a time 5 oz. just disappeared right before my eyes. I loved the tangerine flavor. The  truth was I really didn’t care which flavor, I just loved almost all of them.  I grew up chewing gum because it was recommended by my dentist and I loved to chew it also.

Not the same candy or gum:

Just add a little caffeine to candy or gum and now you have a “sports” jelly bean (1 oz.) and “sports” gum (one stick) with about 40 or 50 milligrams of caffeine per serving. How many servings will each person eat 1... 2.… 3... 4... 5... Who knows especially if the person is a child or teen.

According to the Jelly Belly site (1) these new candies would be great to help out in a work out. This is the description from the site:

“When your workout needs a little more kick, there's Extreme Sport Beans. Each serving contains 50 mg of caffeine, about the same amount in a half a cup of brewed coffee, along with Sport Beans' clinically proven formula of carbohydrates, vitamins and electrolytes. The delicious mix of Watermelon, Cherry and Pomegranate flavors will keep you refreshed throughout your exercise.

This case contains 24 1-oz bags of Assorted flavor.”

The sports gum is marketed similarly as a helpful item and “recommended for adults” However children can pick one up and purchase it. The Wrigley’s website (3) list this description and facts about the new product:

“2013 In April 2013, Wrigley will introduce Alert Energy Caffeine Gum in the U.S., an "on-me" energy solution that gives consumers the power to control how much caffeine they get.

The Right Energy, Right Now."

Alert™ Energy Caffeine Gum is an energy product for adults who consume caffeine for energy and are looking for a portable solution that lets them control their caffeine intake.
*One piece of Alert Energy contains about as much caffeine (40mg) as ½ cup of coffee.
Moderate your daily caffeine intake. Not recommended for children or persons sensitive to caffeine.”

Caffeine zero calories big effect, many studies:

Both of these companies seem to be down playing the significant of the effects of caffeine. There are many studies for many years on the effects of caffeine both affecting adults and children. It seems there is more of a negative affect physically and emotionally on children as seen by a recent study from the Journal of Pediatrics(2) studying children, teens and young adults that there was no health benefit to Energy Drinks that contain high levels of caffeine. The manufacturer claims that these drinks are nutritional supplements so it is not necessary to limit the amounts of caffeine the same as a soda and the safety testing  and labeling needed on pharmaceuticals.  Marketing was aimed at risk taking youth who have developing tendencies combine to increase intake of the drinks to an overdose level.  These drinks leave children with a strong risk for health effects do to exposure of high levels of caffeine, taurine and guarana.

Another study (4) examine caffeine use before, during and after pregnancy and the effects upon the baby found there was no added  risk of to delivery, miscarriages or premature births. The researchers found there was an increase risk of lower birth weight, smaller head size when the level of caffeine reached more then 300 mg per day.

One more study showed a strong  possible link between caffeine and childhood depression. The study concluded  that children that were depressed consumed more caffeinated drinks than children non-depressed children.

Another study (5) found out of 228 children the parents reported that their younger group (5 to 7 year old) consuming about 52 mg of caffeine per day and the older group (8-12 years old) drank 109 mgs of caffeine per day with a negative effect on sleep. The researchers noted that the Spanish speaking parents reported fewer bed-wetting than the parents that spoke English.

Child friendly caffeine dispensed:

The studies seem to be non ending and all that I looked seemed to have a negative for children from the low birth weight, depression connection, sleep deprivation, or possible over dose. It seems we do not need another source of caffeine that is  child-friendly like soda. If one ounce of jelly beans holds 50 mg more than a half a cup of coffee, the question is how many ounces can a child eat with or without a parent’s permission.

The companies are not hiding anything they are stating the facts and saying this is for adults or people in sports not recommending it for children. Who will be there to stop a child from buying them and eating them? They buy candy and gum all the time and when they grow older it seems they eat and drink more. (5)

Final words:

Once I started on the Path of True Health I change, that was easy compared to protecting my children from themselves and others who thought it was necessary to feed them soda with sugar and caffeine or what they thought was a good idea.  I mostly see an overwhelming affect for adults, young or older, teens or children from this new “treat. I see no way to protect our children well. I do not see most children able to use there partially developed brains to make an fully developed adult decision. Many children are easily influence and have the “I want” thought first and only.

I see a negative downward spiral forming and sucking in all in it’s path leaving us all unprepared in a negative each day.  With the ones doing best who have the ability to say no. Yes, there is a positive in all of this a new market created and a way for companies to gain more profits. If the energy drinks had not been so profitable other companies most likely would not be jumping on the band wagon.

Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step on to the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire life time. Together we can protect what we have so we don’t need to live in a world that is second rate.

TRASHED trailer (2012) - Environmental documentary with Jeremy Irons:

My Story:

I have friends who run marathons, walk for whichever cancer, help support organizations that feed the hungry and the list goes on and on.  They feel good about what they are doing and many of these things do help, but do they help enough? As the saying goes, "Give a man a fish and feed him for one meal,  teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for life." Many times I think it is difficult to see the difference and we just don't want to think about it more than we have too. It is someone else who will make sure things are done the best way or at all.

Personal growth can happen when a person is physically fit enough to run 26 miles. It is a personal accomplishment add to it a race for the cure and now it feels like much is being done. Donations are collected and totals on money are announced. What happens next? The real work of changing people to be stronger and self sufficiency seems to be traded for a pretty lollipop  idea that can be pointed to how well we have done. The negative effects are overlooked how much it cost in resources to throw the event. Not only in the cost of running it, but the man hours that could have been used else where, the gas used to drive there, the plastic products used to promote, drink from or eat from, the excitement created to build a desire to help.  Are we just hardwired this way to create something extraordinary attention must be created?

When it comes right down to it, it is the fact of helping people to help themselves that counts. The goal is the same for both ideas the results, I think would be dramatically different if people used the resources in a more intense effort to help others help themselves.  If they understood how important the small things are that dramatically improve the  negative effect on life. What how effective have the resources been used after an event is out of sight out of mind, it will help or will it? Feels like it will anyway. There is always some positive.

One simple solution leads to control of larger challenges:

The simpler choices cost less and take less time, but give very little results. It has been labor intensive to help my family to change for the better, to help them become independent thinkers to not just buy lunch, but make lunch. To buy  the products that are fair trade exchange of money and something that works well. It seems the simple everyday  actions I take help others in ways more than the dramatic ones.

One of the best examples of take care of the small events to keep the larger events in life in check was reported by The New York Times (2) reporting how the New York City police department in the early 90's dropped the crime rate over a 3 year period of time by 39 percent in the seven felony crimes.  By taking care of the small crimes that affected hundreds of operations that resold stolen jewellery and car parts, taking care of hot spots of criminal activity quickly by using extra law enforcement, graffiti vandals and drug sellers.  Many working together created a new picture.

This idea doesn't only count in crime, It could carry over into many areas of our lives. Every time I buy something today, I look at it and think how much will be wasted? The answer is clear.Thinking back three years ago how much trash I produced was considerably more than today.  Out of sight out of mind was my thought pattern. It all looked under control. I never thought twice about going out to eat, just bring home the leftovers. I would often times split a meal and still had leftovers.I felt I was doing my part to control my waste. I saw so many others waste so much more than I, I felt as if I was doing well. I didn't buy as much at the stores or restaurants. That didn't make me great, it made me just slightly less of a problem.

Fast forward 3 and half years later and life changed. I became healthy and my families trash production dropped dramatically. Over 95% of the time I fix my meal, I no longer like take out food, but occasionally still go out to be with friends, not for the food for the friendship. I use all food that comes into the home to eat, drink or recycle back into the land. There are almost no plastic water bottles in my home. I used to buy cases and cases. I use as much as I can and I know I can still improve. I find there not as many boxes, cans, bottles or bags used.  Only what I can not use or recycle I throw away. If one of the large trash cans we use in most of the United States could be picked up every two weeks imagine the savings in gasoline alone.

Reality:

In my lifetime when death rates from car accidents, pollution, hijackings, etc  became too high for people to tolerate change happened to redirect people. Until we hit that point of "have to change because I don't like the stink or the sight of the trash" we will continue to have  waste problem. That will eventually greatly affect the worlds population negatively.  When something is in "your backyard  it becomes important and needs to be addressed. Usually when  people call for actions the end result is a step in the right direction.

Final words:

What would happen if all the trash each person created had to be disposed of on sight like Their own back yard? Would things change quickly? Garbage collectors strikes show how quickly the mountain of trash builds. the reality is it is still anticipated by many all trash will  be picked up, eventually. What if the trash was never pick up what would most people do? Would the choices that seem so difficult today become easy to control what is bought and consumed?

One of the side effects of being on a Path of True Health is a stronger reason to take care of yourself, help others to help themselves and keep the Earth sustainable. What becomes important is no longer eating out or buying things because it is new. What becomes important are the things that we Truly need to live a "good" life. If the items work rather than if they are the best and most advanced. Self improvement becomes s part of everyday life and indirectly by giving only money. Often times people become more intune to  a need and a better way to help.  Money does help, but it should not be the final thought.  Understanding the reality of our choices may helps to know how to accomplish more with less time, effort and money.

It is clear the longer it takes for the masses to change the more difficult it will be contain the growing mountain of trash on land and water created by the world. . The better a person feels the more likely they will take time to make a better choice for all. There are places in life to have the thrill of running a marathon or personal accomplishments, it is having a a secondary goal of improving the world around us that makes it a better choice.

Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step on to the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire life time. Together we can protect what we have so we don't need to live in a world that is second rate. We don't have to be perfect we just have to try to be better everyday.

These are some squash seeds growing through dirt. The dirt looks heavier than a ton for the small plants to grow through. They overcome push through the darkness of being under the soil and with a little luck continue to grow to produce food.

Push through the dark and difficult times to find the light and grow.

“20 million with a Silent Killer: Kidney Disease goes from bad to worse to death. Is Vitamin D the super hero?” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 27, 2013

“20 million with a Silent Killer:
Kidney Disease  goes from bad to worse to death.
Is Vitamin D the super hero?”
~ Cynthia G. Creel
April 27, 2013

My Story:

A few months ago I found out that my friend had kidney failure. I was saddened such a vital person was now forced to become dependant on so many others. Something he abhorred the idea for many years and now he is stuck. His story is like so many others, extra weight and diabetes and now kidney failure. What is there left to do?

No symptoms from kidney disease and affecting millions:

Percent with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among adult U.S. population
by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.

According the  Center of  Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) (2)  early signs of  Chronic kidney disease (CDK) when the kidneys are damaged and can no longer filter blood as needed are symptom free and can only be detected by a blood test. It is being closely associated with diabetes, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases. It affects 20 million (10%) adults 20 years older or older in the United States . The more problems you have the more likely you will have CDK , of those with CDK  more than 35% of adults age 20 and up with diabetes and 20% of adults age 20 and up have hypertension. 50% more often CDK will developed into kidney failure for women than men with the only treatment options are dialysis or kidney transplant. Kidney failure affects African Americans  4 times more. Individuals with CKD are 16 to 40 times greater risk of dying before they reach Kidney Failure.

New Studies vitamin D, seasonal and kidney function:

Few people know that kidney function or glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is connected to the seasons with wintertime  and summertime according to a new study with vitamin D levels fluctuation between winter and summer months. The study concluded that GFR should be monitored carefully with seasonal changes.(1)

With a second study on the relationship of vitamin D and Kidney transplant published in March 2013(3) the authors found there was no connection between Vitamin D and transplant success or survival.  However there was relationship of higher risk of loss of functional renal outcomes though interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (affecting kidney function) and low levels of vitamin D  when vitamin D 3 levels were detected low 3 months after a transplant.

Final Words:

Another silent killer is out there waiting to take a productive person and turn them into a needy person that many die way to early. Of course the silent killer of CDK has a great risk of killing before it actually turns into kidney failure.

With the new association of Vitamin D levels and kidney function it might be wise to confirm with your medical professional the levels of vitamin D and kidney function. And if you are already part of the 20 million with CKD it might be time to take extra care before kidney failure can take hold finding out if your vitamin D levels are acceptable though your medical care professional.

“No hiding behind an average weight: Samoa Airlines charging by the pound for people or cargo, fare is fair?” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 26, 2013

“No hiding behind an average weight:
Samoa Airlines charging by the pound for people or cargo, fare is fair?”

~ Cynthia G. Creel
April 26, 2013

My story:

Every year for about 20 years I gained a pound or two or three. I stopped weighing myself and just didn't want to think about it. The clothes with more modern fabrics became more pliable leaving me with a false perception I wasn't so bad.

There were few signs that gave me a clue of where I was in respects of my weight. Until I was about 37 pound overweight with only about 25 pound more to be considered obese. That was news to me and shocking. The National Institutes of Health provides a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator for anyone to find what their numbers are. (2)

Having excess weight seem to be a common story in the world today. I had tried to lose weight before with the only motivation that worked was the fear of dying from a heart attack.  I had lost my 37 pounds and it felt better.  One of the best part was all the money I had started to save because I wasn't as large. I quickly found how expensive it was to carry the excess weight in daily care of my body, the toll on my health and all the cost associated with having an unhealthy lifestyle.

Discrimination  or fair to base on weight?:

CBS news (1) reports Samoa Airlines began to charge passengers based on their weight. Some of the largest people are from the islands with 86% of Samoa’s being overweight today. With a dilemma created by the variation on the size of people and nowhere else to hide the increase in fair the decision was made to pay per pound for people or cargo by Samoa Airlines. The options were limited  other airlines could raise prices on beverages or luggage. The Samoa Airlines don't offer beverages and their planes don't carry much cargo, so there wasn't an option to increase prices on these to help to compensate for the increased cost of transporting heavier people.

The reality is for an airplane the only factor that matters is the weight affecting the amount of fuel needed to fly from point A to point B caring x amount of weight. It not only becomes an issue of survival for an airline financially, it also alleviates a safety issues of having an actual number of pounds rather than estimate that has a possibility of showing too little weight  instead the reality of weight carried being higher with the possibility of negatively affect the actual amount of fuel needed to complete a flight and the possibility how the plane many handle under a wide variety of weather conditions during a flight.

Final words:

This new trend of charging by the pound for people or cargo, if successful, will most likely travel throughout the airline industry. If the airlines don't make the ticket price fair by charging per pound than a guess on the hidden weight will most likely be attached somewhere else that may or may not be fair to paying passengers.  Hiding the cost could become more costly for everyone if the guess is too high that might even over inflate the cost of a child traveling.

A company needs to make a profit to stay in business and a fair trade for money is the best business plan. The Samoan Airlines are helping to secure their ability to offer needed service by making a profit. The profit is up by 20% using the pay by weight method. There is no hiding behind an average weight policy where the company can make more profits off many or lose profits because the guessed wrong.

It is the truth that might be difficult for many to face, having a reminder in a sale of a ticket may be a needed reality check. Not being faked out by clothing that stretches to fit or  paying the same as everyone else could give a new picture to find a reminder of  the “real” numbers  each persons carries in life.

Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step onto the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire lifetime  Together we can protect what we have so we don't need to live in a world that is second rate.

“Talk, think then action: One man‘s way to deal with Alzheimer‘s Disease many help many” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 25, 2013

“Talk, think then action:
One man‘s way to deal with Alzheimer‘s Disease many help many”

~ Cynthia G. Creel

April 25, 2013

My Story:

I was the heaviest I had ever been, I knew I had a problem and I didn't want to talk about it! Ignorance is bliss. Then one day I realized after looking a the numbers from blood lab work the real picture looked grim. I couldn't live in a fairytale anyone. I went from not thinking about  my wait to thinking all the time. Wondering how to solve my problem,  I didn't want to die yet. The sad part is there are so many people who aren't ready to think they might have something to overcome. They live in a world of “I will think about that later” just waiting for nothing to happen and knowing in the back of their mind everything will happen one day.

One doctor’s solution:

Mail Online (1) reported this month about Doctor David Hilfiker who was diagnosed recently with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) instead of sitting around being depressed waiting for the disease to take away his memories he is taking action. He started a blog to help him spread the word that having AD isn't a top secret to be hidden away and covered up so no one knows about it. It is a reality for some that he wants people to be free to talk about it. When we can talk about something then we may be able to find better answers to help us deal with issues that arise under difficult circumstances. When many people dealing with the same issue are able to be unchained to talk about the forbidden that frees them up to think about what they are dealing with and how to solve a set of challenges each day.

Final words:

AD or weight gain are two of many  challenges to be dealt with by many people. Taking emotional control helps to keep Hilfiger’s and my mind going in the right direction. It seems he has stopped thinking beyond writing a blog. My thoughts run to what is possible in recreating a new working mind. (2). We can wait, become angry or try to improve against all odds. Sometimes we might be able to push the odds to our own favor. After all if I hadn't challenged my whole beliefs I wouldn't be writing this blog right now. I shudder to think where I would be if I hadn't taken control and pushed on.

“Bird Flu on the move to Taiwan: Next stop? Being prepared” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 24, 2013

“Bird Flu on the move to Taiwan:
Next stop? Being prepared”

~ Cynthia G. Creel

April 24, 2013

The new bird flu facts:

Just 4 days ago  I wrote about the Bird Flu in China in an article about the H7N9 or the bird virus affecting people and West Nile virus affecting birds. (1)  On April 20, 2013 there had  been 60 confirmed cases with 13 deaths. Just like bad news traveling fast so is the H7N9. According the Center of Disease Control of Taiwan  (CDCT) (2) a Taiwanese man has contracted a deadly strain of bird flu. Until today  the virus had been contained to main land China where the numbers of deaths had gone up in the last few days to 22 and 109 that have been infected according to the  Center of Disease  Control China (CDCC) (3) . All though the 53 year old man was hospitalized and tested, the first test turned out negative for the bird flu, it took 2 weeks to confirm the reality, he had contracted the bird flu.

Transmission limited:

There is no proof the bird flu can be transmitted from human to human. It is possible that could happen at anytime or never. We do not have the  ability to accurately predict when changes will happen. Nature is always on the move, helping us or hurting us.

The best defense:

One day a body can just start feeling poorly. Our bodies are being attacked by the small and mighty microscopic world.  The best defense is to have a body that is ready to defend against large or small. In the case of the bird flu it may be the difference between survival and death. A body that works well takes time to build.

“Where will a thirsty world create drinking water?: Priceless water, another 23 million human mouths and counting” ~ Cynthia G. Creel April 23, 2013

My Story:

I was like everyone else really concerned  for everyone in Boston after the bombings and in Texas after the fertilizer plant seemed to just arbitrarily blow up this week. My everyday challenges seemed to just pale in comparison. Until the moment I step onto the land again, to farm the day before irrigation. Then the emergency concerns include the reality. The far reaching arm of our basic needs for most Americans may be out of reach having their needs always being taking care of by water utility or food “magically” showing up in a store to purchase.

My farm has access to an irrigation system with water available every 2 weeks. In California for years there has been a fight between the city, farming and wildlife for the availability of water. We all need usable water to live. If I do not have clean water for my plants to grow I will not have anything to eat. In the bigger picture is no different, no water for plants, no food for people. The drought in California or other areas has not helped matters.

Water in the United States is cheap and free for the asking many times in public places or restaurants. Water is everywhere in the United States where there are people and business. Usually when I read about dehydration, in the United States,  it comes from a person doing something extreme or an unhealthy person who just doesn't drink enough for some reason. It is not about access to water.

A demonstration of how special clean  useable drinking water was given years ago in my daughter’s third grade class. If all the water on the Earth were represented in a 5 gallon aquarium, 2 cups would represent all the fresh water on the Earth the rest would contain salt. From the 2 cups only ½ cup would not be frozen. From the ½ cup only one drop of water represents the portion of all the Earths water available for use the rest of the half cup is either polluted, inaccessible or too costly to transport.

That was the end of the conversation for her class, I wished it had continued to include what I found on the cresis.ku.edu (1) site which talks about how water affects our bodies. Our bodies are 70% water and can survive only around a week without water. Americans use 176 gallons of water per day compared to an African family used around 5 gallons of water per day. One drop of water contains billions of water molecules with only 1 in 6 people in the world having access to clean drinking water.

Drought can happen almost anywhere, any time:

The United States over the last few decades seems to have to deal with longer droughts affecting us all. Water is becoming more precious in the United States and the world. According to the drought monitor  as of April 16th 2013 (2, 3) there  is persistent drought  in most of the Western United States and Hawaii with improvement being questionable this year

Population and water:

Drought has always been a part of the Earth. What has not always been a part of the Earth are the 7 billion inhabitants  With a net gain reported on the world meters (4) as of April 23, 2013 around 1 pm, California time a net increase in the world population in 2013 so far is over 23,000.000.

All of this is not taking into consideration of  farming, plants, domesticated animals or wildlife we all need water. The question is will we have enough for everyone? It doesn't feel like there is a problem when all I have to do is turn on an irrigation valve at the right time to water my farm or walk to the kitchen sink and turn on the water.

For those who struggle every day just to get through the day without time to consider the larger picture, it may only be a passing thought. Rich and poor alike we are trapped in our ability to understand and create ways in our everyday  life that will help or hurt the larger need. Knowing, planning and taking actions are complex thoughts that an unhealthy nation may not be able to act in time.

One solution:

One of the newest ideas for saving water and creating electricity come out of India reported Hindu news (6)  the use of a solar system placed over a canal. No new land use and helping to save the water in the canal from evaporation. Conserving and creating resources for a populated world to use wisely.

Final thoughts:

Right now there are only a small population of  SuperAger (5)  with an ability to remember longer and more information, we are left with too many with an inability  to remember long term. The actions of an in tune person are very different than those who are only managing to pay the bills or are in a losing battle. What becomes important to a desperate person to hold on to money (even if they have millions) to hold on to a home to live in, to hold on to the food they need each day, to hold on to life is very different than someone from a viewpoint of knowing what is Truly Important to be successful with contentment and inner peace.

The more needy we are as a population the more resources we use. What I can do for my family does help them keep on track, it helps the world but will not save the world. Only many people moving in the same direction can we all keep this world going for every tomorrow.

Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step onto the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars to help create a world you will love to live in. I do and I like the world I am creating. Together we can help create a better life for all to. Together we can help protect what we have so we can live another day to do better than before. Together we have the possibility of doing better than alone.

“ Maybe a way to help stop the ripple effects of depression: the vitamin D connection.” ~ Cynthia G. Creel

“ Maybe a way to help
stop the ripple effects of depression:
the vitamin D connection.”

~ Cynthia G. Creel
April 22, 2013

My Story:

“ ….had suffered with depression for some time, and had went missing …..  despite family efforts to be with her constantly. I regret to share with you that…. went in front of an….. yesterday and was killed.”

Those were the words I read this morning, bring back to the front of my mind others who had taken their own lives.

A decade before, it was a call from a friend distraught over her husband‘s suicide, a friend of 15 years no more ….

Over 40 years ago it was a picture of a little girl, born a few years before me, with bright blonde hair and blue eyes who at 3 had died within hours from meningitis. As my mom and I looked at the picture of my grandmother carrying my happy, young cousin, my mom would say sadly, “My aunt was never the same after her daughter died, it was just a few years later she took her life while she was 8 months pregnant. They were always so happy, I just don't know why….” There wasn't much to say, just a feeling of loss and that something had been missed to help this lost soul.

I realized now that by sharing this information with me I saw the long term effects of a lost soul’s life taken by their own hand. They were not the only ones hurt. We did not talk about this often, and when we did it was viewed as the person needed something that no one could figure out how to help before it was too late.

I would see my young cousins and how their lost of their mom affected them and how a single parent, father, would struggle alone to raise his boy and girl and mourn the loss of his first born, his unborn child and his wife. This was forever a part of their lives and forever a fringe part of my families life. We lived on knowing there is no helping the dead only the living. We could not change the past only move forward to do better and remember those lost to help protect the ones still with us.

A new answer that may help:

I know there have been others who have been on the outskirts of my life that have parted or survived an attempt. I have been surprised when I have found out who I have known that has made an attempt.

I am fortunate that even if a thought of suicide entered my mind, it was just as quickly pushed away as a non viable solution and there would be another way that was better to solve challenges in my life.

In 2006 a documentary filmed the Golden Gate Bridge filming 23 out of 24 suicides with a few who survived this attempt.  An article in Time (2) interview with one survivor, Kevin Hines age 16 years old at the time, describes the details of why he decide to jump to  living beyond the jump. Hines first thought in the 4 seconds before he hit the water was, “I don't want to die.” I wonder how often this happens when the reality of the situation makes it too late to change the mind. One key maybe is to have the thoughts to live another day before it is too late. One of the influencing factors in hurting oneself listed is depression.

A recent study (1) showed people with a low level of vitamin D had a relationship to depressive symptoms more commonly found in people with a history of depression.

Final words:

Life it complex and it can be overwhelming to some. Vitamin D may be one link to why depression happens. It is one of the easiest to have checked by a medical professional. A simple blood test will tell what your numbers are. It is one tool that just might help keep the blues away and possibly stopping the ripple effect before the action of “jumping off the bridge” happens.

Together we have the possibility of doing better than alone.
