The Great American Investments
Space, Human Genome  & the BRAIN:
The future is so bright we will need shades.”

My story:

July 20, 1969
I was 10 years old and my mom was commanding me to quickly sit on the couch. If I didn’t hurry the moment would pass forever.

As Neil Armstrong stepped off the ladder  taking the first steps on to the moon we hear his famous line, “This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” At that very moment, my mom, secured a memory for a lifetime for me by saying with emotion, “We were a part of history all 5 of us sitting on this couch watching the first steps by a man on the moon. We can never sell this couch.” The last part, about the couch, was only a little joke and the first part was truly a part of history that I may or may not have remembered.

At the same moment in time of greatness there was a time of turmoil in July of 1969 President Nixon orders the first of many U.S. troop withdrawals from Vietnam. A war that created much unrest during my childhood. I was aware of yet it seems like far way and important to many, maybe not that important to me. My brothers and father were too young or too old to serve. My oldest brother, came close to being old enough and selected for the drafted into the military, if the draft had not ended he would have done his duty and gone.

I know now my mom must have been going out of her mind during this time, not one negative, scared word came form my parents to me. I only remember them talking to my brother for a few moments trying to figure out what he had to do. Then after the danger had passed of my brother’s possibility of stepping forward as requested by the US government, my mom, only said a few times how close it was that my brother would have gone and how lucky we all were that he and many others would be saved.

This day in July was a great contrast to war, it represented to me what the United States government could do. The power that the government held could be used to create great destruction on others and to create a movement forward to do what no one else was willing to create a foot print on the surface of the moon, a step forward to move towards a better way of life. A true pairing of government and private industry with a goal to create a better way of life.

Space program:

Many  ideas have been create from the space program. The  National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the 50th/50th magazine(6) the space program has helped create everything from a portable cooling system for treating multiple sclerosis, spinal  injuries and sports injuries, light weight breathing system for firefighters,  a mechanical medical arm allowing surgeons to operate three instruments  at the same time,  the ability to restore two 19th century paintings covered in soot from a fire in Cleveland, Ohio without touching or rubbing the delicate surface with countless other inventions helping everyday life helping with many medical procedures, saving lives. It was a time to learn from the new of what to do or not to do, it was a beginning to greater ideas.

I realize now in both these of a space program and a war acts there was positive and negative from both, the best was would only be discovered over time. It is easy to see what the “Space Race” created for the nation. The return on every dollar invested, more importantly the ideas it seeded with every child and adult in America at the time.

Recent past: The Human Genome Project (HGP)

Sometimes I can only see the “bad” in the world and the “good” stays hidden, until one day it is there like magic. I have often times said, “Each United States president has the ability to create or hinder forward movement.” In looking solely what is good, not the person, the president, the results of an effort. I feel the greatness of this country again. The same hope I had with the space program I have had with the  The Human Genome Project (HGP). Described by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  (3) as of 2003 a completed  project in just 13 years that has identified all the genes in human DNA by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Health with combined efforts from countries around the world. Including Japan, France, Germany, China and others with a goal of identifying around 25,000 genes and determine the sequences of the 3 billion base pairs that make u human DNA reported by genomics.energy.gov (5) This project was created only with an idea, the money spent on it at the time could not predicted the out come in future years. Similar thoughts are produced as stated in the State of the Union 2013 (1) address for every $1 spent on the HGP there has been a return of $140. More than money it created ideas to be build upon.

Today mapping of the brain:

The next great project is here. The State of the Union 2013 address tells of hope, of investment in our future by a government that can lead and work with others to create  the newest project the BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies). The BRAIN is the 10 year project of mapping the activates of the brain.  Today there is a cost, tomorrow will show us how much our investment creates in  a better world.

Final words:

I have to be thankful for living in a time when so much good. The great American projects have  come out of investment in ideas. Put these ideas into action, by a government and private industry, which has helped to discover why having a foot print on the moon represented an idea to move forward not just an impression on the surface of the moon.

The complexes information  form the HGP may not be understood by the average person, but the hope and the advancements can be shared by everyone. The ideas from the BRAIN will lead us to a new place.

The future of the BRAIN isn’t here yet. What we have today is the ability to stepping on to the Path of True health. To be proactive and  helps each person to move forward in understanding  by supporting a project from the government, a company or a product we have the power to vote with each word or dollar to help create the world would like to live in.
