“I don’t want to die: flu shot only 9% effective for some, now what?”

~ Cynthia G. Creel

She laid in bed with the fever raging, her stomach tied in knots and wishing all would be better now. She said a little prayer being thankful she had a vaccine knowing that had surly helped her, obviously not enough though. The only thing that could have been worse was to be elderly too. She had to stay away from her grandmother to protect her from giving what she had. She worried if she had already infected her by giving her that hug and kiss just yesterday, before she realized she was coming down with the flu. All she could do now was pray and hope because if she was this sick and her grandmother become infected, what would it do to her grandmother?

How long would this last? She had no time to feel sick, she had work to do, kids to care for, anything, but this. As she tried desperately to be distracted she blow her nose and watched  the movie Star Wars on her note pad. Nothing worked she would sleep and rest until the moment she felt better then she would move forward in her life with only a quick forgettable expiation of where she was by saying, “I had the most awful flu, thought I was going to die.” There might be a chuckle then the topic would  move on. That is unless she didn't get over it or worse yet be responsible for infecting her grandmother and she didn't live. She shuttered to think of that possibility and drifted off to sleep wishing there was some way to have made this all be a moot point, just not understanding how.

The flu doesn't sound so bad on the surface, it just makes people sick for a few days than right back to work. No one dies, unless their bodies fail to protect them even with help from our modern solutions sometimes are not enough. In the United States the first line of defense is to get a flu shot. Flu shots are the best guess from the people in the white lab coats what will be coming our way. The one thing that is for sure the flu keeps changing. It is natures way, change and the strongest survive, in this case microscopic little warriors ready to set up house keeping in any host they can find. The new Report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (1) gave much incite of the effectiveness of the vaccine for the 2012/2013 flu season.  The 2012/2013flu vaccine has missed the mark for destroying the effects of the flu virus targeting  the N1N1 (swine flue) strain, a new strain of H3N2  and the 2010 influenza B strain for most as the most likely cause.

Keeping them on a healthy path with little or no effect from being exposed by this persistent pest that antibodies are not effective on any virus. According to the  Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Consumer Health Information report, “Although antibiotics kill bacteria, they are not effective against viruses. Therefore, they will not be effective against viral infections such as colds, most coughs, many types of sore throat, and influenza (flu).”(2) The second line of defense that is used against an attacker like the flu is just not effective. In fact if you take the antibiotics against a virus there could be a very negative effect on the environment that could possibly  affect the purity of our drinking water. (3)

Today we are well into the flu season and there is still a great risk for our elderly the CDCP reports for seniors  65 and older the flu shot will only give them a small amount of protection for about  9% of the time against the H3N2 strain. What does this leave for many? To suffer and hope this will not kill them? The (CDC) (4) also recommends two FDA approved influenza antiviral medications for use in the United States during the 2012 - 2013 influenza season which are chemically related antiviral medications as neuraminidase inhibitors that are effective  also recommending identification of infection and  treatments as early as possible if there a patient is hospitalized, has severe, complicated, or progressive illness, or at higher risk for influenza complications among other recommendations. Again leaving the pure drinking water at risk. (4)

We have options, the questions are they good enough? It seems to me that the first defense is being skipped by many. Before I stepped on to the path of True Health I didn't even consider that as my first tool to stop a virus before it can take up house keeping in the body. I would get my flu shot or not and hope for the best, not really thinking there was anything to be done by me. Once I stepped on the path of True Health I found that there was much to be done to protect myself from the world of changing on a daily bases. The flu virus changes every year and the people in control over the design of the flu shot will do their best to cover as much as they can as quickly as they can so the flu shot ultimately only gives only some advantage of staying unaffected by the smallest of attackers. The antiviral medications is the third resort allowing me to have the problem and still help me beat it. We do what we need to do to help our body work the best, it is better to be alive to fight the fight another day then loose the war.

What I see is all options: of getting the flu shot and still getting the flu having to stay home, buy and use and antiviral if things aren’t going your way, possibly ending up in the hospital with all have a chance of being avoided if the body is strong enough to begin with to defeat the attackers before the first battle even begins.

Judging if a flu shot is right for you to help you fight off the flu usually means the consideration of the side effects from the flu shot itself. Each of us has to ask which is worse the shot or the flu? So be proactive do your research to find out what is best for you. Contact  your medical care professional to find out all the options and consider what can be done in every day life that will give you the edge against these uninvited guests.

So far there have been many around me who have been sick enough to stay home. According to the CDC’s FluView  2012 -2013 influenza Season Week 7 ending February 16, 2013, the most current deaths from the 2012 -2013 so far have been 78 and counting with many more being not affect to ending up in the hospital before recovery. (5) I can’t stop the expose completely all I can do is limited it. I can’t stop the virus from changing all I can do is be as prepared as possible. I can only control what I do, not others and the advantage is mine so far no flu, no headaches, no colds, no fever, just a body that is working to protect me 24/7. If  the odds don’t go in my favor I will fall back on the other options as quickly as possible starting with my arsenal of tools that work with my body to fight and win the battles deep inside to my very core.  I am hopeful if I am successful it will be no accident, it will be By Design. My hopes for all is the same. Keep up the good work, it works at any age.
