“Are smokers being
push out at the work place?
Some farmers growing chickpeas
instead of tobacco. ”

When I grew up it was polite to offer a cigarette to your guest before you started smoking. I never did pick up the habit, yet many people I knew did. At one time it seemed most adults smoked. It felt like if you didn’t smoke you were not quite cool or sexy.
Study predicts more smokers stop smoking and 1 million deaths in the future:
Today the pendulum seems to have swung to the other way of thinking. One study (1) states smoking is expected to kill about 1 billion people in the 21st century because of addiction to tobacco. Through restrictions on smoking in public places and workplace, tax increase, bands on advertising and promotion, all may contribute to reduction in the use of tobacco and improve the health of the population.
Will employers choose non smokers over smokers?:
According to the CBS News show This Morning (3) a new study in Tobacco Control Magazine tells of the high cost of hiring a smoker. It was estimated that a smoker cost 6,000 more than a non smoker for an employer. With changes in the health care and companies having to provide medical issuance companies may be looking for every way the are able to lower the cost of health insurance by a possible ban on smokers in the work place. Currently in the United States it is legal not ot higher someone if they can not preformed the job such as a fire fighter can not be 500 pound and out of shape for his job.
Hummus more in demand then tobacco:
As smoking become less in demand it seems the chickpea crops are high in demand and farms in the Pacific Northwest of the United States with some farmers switching from growing tobacco to chickpea crops, the primary ingredient in hummus which was up by 51% in the U.S. from last year.
PepsiCo buying in on the chickpea boom:
Reuters (4) reports PepsiCo company expects to use about 6,500 tons of chickpeas in 2012, and expects growth to almost 12,000 tons in 2014 including helping Ethiopia with a possible doubling of Ethiopian chickpea exports by 2014, At the time this article was written in September 2011 PepsiCo’s goals were “…in March 2010 that it would aim to triple the amount of revenue derived from "good-for-you" products such as Tropicana orange juice and Quaker oatmeal to $30 billion by 2020, up from roughly $10 billion at the time.”
Are Chickpeas a GMO?
I could not find if the Chick pea has been changed yet and being sold. However, there is evidence they have been test grown (5). The Telegraph(6) in 2011 reported on a GMO (genetically modified organism) chickpea resistant to weevils through the Assam Agricultural University located in India. The researches thought the weevil resistant chickpea would be safer then seeds doused in pesticides. The European Union thought the weevil resistant chickpea would be harmful for humans because of the change of the gene which was resistant to the antibiotic Kanamycinin.
I could find no evidence this new GMO Chickpea has been approved for human consumption and currently being sold. It is one reason labeling is so important so we know what is in the container.
Final Word:
It seems we are in some ways speaking loud and clear and the business are following the orders given by the millions of customers that the demand is for chickpeas not tobacco. It seems this is a win/win situation possibly less smoking and more hummus. There would only be a question if the hummus was made from a GMO (I found no evidence of a GMO chickpea is being sold to consumers at this time)
We will see the affects of a company having a smoker as an employee costing them around $6,000 more than a non smoker. The bottom line is the important factor and it may be working in favor of the consumers, less tobacco being grown, incentive to stop smoking to have more opportunity for employment and eating hummus.
