Transplants save lives. Could there be a therapy that stop rejection just like a pregnancy?” ~ Cynthia G. Creel 6-6-2013

My Story:

A local girl about 15 years ago was luck to receive a transplant. I met one of the doctors that helped her. The day she received the transplant was the day of hope, a shinning star of modern technology . The day that she died was the day that shattered all hope and showed just how inadequate modern medicine can be.

The transplant operation created a working heart from another human being in her body. The down fall was nature. The body’s defense system that couldn’t stop “picking” at the heart, just like a little kid picking at a scab, not matter how much a mom tells them to stop.

Dying girl now on adult list for new lung:

CBS news (1)  reports a 10  year old girl dying from cystic fibrosis is now able to be on the adult waiting list for a lung. An exception was made after a law suit was filed and a U.S. District Judge order the girl be placed on the adult list for a new lung.

I am hoping the best for this young girl and yet from previous out comes I know she has a long road ahead of her making sure her body doesn’t reject the new lung. What if there was another way to stop the body from rejecting this “foreign” heart?

The Rh factor, the mother’s body may reject a fetus with different Rh:

When I was pregnant I had to be concerned with the Rh factor. Any women who had a negative type of blood and is going to have a baby needs to be aware if the father has a positive blood type that may create the Rh factor during pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association (APA) The Rh factor is a type of protein on the outside of blood cells.  The risk is  the mother’s body will think the baby is foreign object if the fetus is an Rh positive and the mother is a Rh negative (no Rh factor)  the mother’s own immune system will develop antibodies to attack the fetus and kill it as if it was a  foreign invader like any transplanted tissue. When the babies and mother’s blood mixes the mother’s body will respond as if it were allergic to the baby.

Luckily, there is an  injection or Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg), that is similar to an allergy shot preventing sensitization of an RH-negative mother. However, if antibodies develop the baby may need a transfusion of healthy blood  after a normal deliver or the baby may need to be delivered early or given an intrauterine  transfusion.

Why mom’s bodies don’t’ reject placenta or baby:

The process of creating life seems to be a miracle in itself. Why doesn’t the mother’s body reject the placenta or the fetus? (when no Rh factor is present)  Science News (2) reports on a new discovery of the relationship between the mother, the fetus and the placenta. The placenta may carry a baby to full term, healthy as can be, or it may be responsible for  late miscarriages, stillbirths, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction and a host of other placenta problems.

The amazing part about the placenta starts as part of the fetus and attached to the mother to provide food for  the fetus. The baby and the placenta are made up of foreign genes (half from the father). If a transplant using one of the father’s organs into the mother’s body, the mother’s body would instantly reject it.

The  placenta starts keeping peace between itself, the baby and mother’s body by excreting exosomes  which tells the mother’s immune system to leave them alone, they are safe and fine to live in the body for the next 9 months.  The placenta also tells the mother’s immune system to protect the fetus also from other foreign invaders.

Normally the mother’s “killer” cells identify bacteria, viruses or rogue human cells by asking for identification thought protein that would match the mother’s proteins and when that doesn’t match the “killer” cells pounces on the invader. He placenta  takes care of the cells by creating a “fake identification” so the fetus can grow into a baby without being disturbed over the next + months.

Final words:

Currently anti rejection drugs are needed after a transplant. My hope in the near future if a transplant is needed the operation and recover could be completed almost seamlessly. Today we can operate and transplanted new tissue to a different body. If it is a heart the surgeon will know if the sugary is successful right away when the heart starts to beat on its own. The next great step will be when after the transplant just like the placenta  works it’s magic on the mother’s immune system, the immune system can be fooled  permanently  into thinking this foreign tissue is ok and activated to protect the new tissue as if it is part of the body all along. Maybe in the long run transplants won’t be necessary at all.
