“New study shows hands free cell phone and driving may be risky business”

My friend, “John” was just sitting waiting for the light to change on his drive home and it happened. The guy behind him slammed into him while he was talking on his cell phone. John’s head hit the glass of the back window of the truck and he was left with a neck injury and migraine headaches that took months to heal to feel somewhat normal again. All over a conversation that could have take place somewhere else.
First solution (not the best) for cell phones and driving hands free:
The use of cell phones had changed the world in many ways for the better, but in many ways for the worse creating a problem of talking on the phone driving, car crashes and injury or death. A study from the American Journal of Public Health taking statistics from 1999 to 2008 concluded that distracting action and driving incidents had increased in more recent years including using, talking or texting on cell phones causing and increase in fatal vehicle accidents on public roads. The authors of the study recommended that texting bans should legislated and enforced. With a recommendation of using a hands free device.
Times have changed with a new study there is always new information and what we thought to be good turns bad. Hands free may not be so safe after all.
New study says hand free cell phone use can be risky business:
The University of Utah conducted a study that discovered a cause for concern over using cell phones to talk, text or send email with a hand free devices. The double duty of driving and using the cell phone or hands free device with speech activation can overload the driver’s ability to drive safer. An unrecognized result from thinking driver safety would increase with speech activation in cell phones to understanding the reality it hindering the drivers ability to respond to the events happening on the road way.
Professor David Strayer, lead author of the study, says “Don’t assume that if your eyes are on the road and your hands are on the wheel that you are unimpaired. If you don’t pay attention then you are a potential hazard on the roadway.”
Call for action before more get hurt or die:
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (2) simply states that the new findings “show dangerous mental distractions exist even when drivers keep there hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.” Drivers seem to be unable to keep track of the important visual cues to drive safer discovered when analyzing brainwaves, eye movement and other metrics while performing ordinary tasks of listening to an audio book or talking on the phone to listening and responding to voice-activated emails while driving.
By 2018 a predicted increase by 5 times infotainment systems AAA is highly concerned and is calling for quick action that may include limiting the use of voice-activated technology, disabling certain functions when the vehicle is in motion, educating motorists and working with policy makers, safety advocates and industry to help keep driving safer with new technologies.
More profits and more good:
The auto insurance industry and the public should have a great benefit from the new information of learning our capacity of driving and using a hands free device. If this changes our actions and what is manufactured to result in safer driving leading to saving lives and keeping people and vehicles from being injured or damaged, it is a win win situation. Insurance companies cost are controlled and leading to possible more profits or reduction in fees charged and people in general may just go about their business with less risk of a vehicle accident saving them time, money, pain and suffering.
Final words:
What we believe isn't always what is true. I discovered this concept many times over in the last 3 years. It seems the reality of the way our brains work are similar to computers when asked to too much they just stop working well unable to perform the simplest of task and upon occasion crash and burn. We may not be able to use voice activation, talk on cell phones, text or listening and responding to emails while driving a vehicle. This just may be a truth for most of us. The best part is if we understand the truth of a situation we can act appropriately and hopefully save many more lives from some one being hurt or killed which affects the person, those associated with the person and society costing much time, suffering and money.
