"More GE wheat growing in open fields? Approved and upheld deregulation of GE alfalfa? Where will it end?" ~ Cynthia G. Creel 6-7-2013

"More GE wheat growing in open fields?
Approved and upheld deregulation
of GE alfalfa?
Where will it end?"

My story:

I opened a bean pod and saw two different looking beans. I had both varieties on the farm and lots of active bees. It is the way plants survive and thrive through open pollination where any bee can carry pollen to any other plant it lands on.

Genetically modified (GE)  wheat  showing up in a field in Oregon (1) that was taken out of nature by Monsanto (the giant biotech company)  just to show up in nature. But it is more than just one GE wheat we have to worry about it looks like there are other GE wheat and GE alpha.

More than on GE wheat one being tested since 2011:

Common dreams (2) reports As reported last week Monsanto’s finding  wheat in Oregon after the Genetically modified (GM) or GE wheat GM glyphosate-resistant wheat MON 71800 had been taken out of the environment.  after being tested in 100 fields from 1998 through 2005. Field tests were conducted in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming,".  Finding the GE wheat has caused an international back lash which may cause countries not to accept wheat from the US or to turn back a contaminated shipment of wheat with a GE wheat.

Even though Monsanto took one GE wheat out of the picture so to speak the giant biotech company started testing another GE in 2011 (common dream sites Bloomberg (5)) with 150 acres of GE wheat in Hawaii last year and 300 acres of GE wheat in North Dakota this year. It is not known which herbicide Monsanto is trying to create the GE wheat to be resistant to.

GE Alpha approved by USDA and up held by federal Ninth District  Court:

On June 5, 2013 Cornucopia (3) states that alfalfa is grown over 21 million acres and is worth $8 billion per year (not including the value of final products like dairy products.) feed to cattle and dairy cows, pigs, lamb, sheep, honey productions and eaten as alfalfa sprouts. A GE crop of alfalfa can be easily spread  because it is an open pollination crop by bees which travel 4 - 6 miles in the effort to collect pollen. This is a real threat for biological contamination from near by fields up to  miles away that may affect the non GE farmers, dairies and other livestock producers. Escaped or feral plants may live on for years. Coexisting conventional Alfalfa and GE alfalfa may end up in the long run impossible to control. Still the USDA approved deregulation of GE alfalfa and the federal Ninth District Circuit Court upheld the decision.

Law suites may be a hollow victory or and agonizing defeat:

The Seattle Times(4) reported on June 6, 2013 that  Washington farmers are suing Monsanto seeking a class-action status claiming the soft white wheat farmers have been harmed by the GE wheat found in an Oregon field.
The Seattle times quotes the USDA, “USDA has said the wheat crop is safe, [the Food and Drug Administration] confirmed food and feed safety in 2004, and USDA has stated repeatedly that there is no indication that glyphosate-tolerant wheat has entered commerce.”

Lawsuits can go on for months or years. No matter who wins the law suit the question is will it be too late to do anything to save our crops from being contaminated with a GE crop?

Final words:

GE crops seem to be unstoppable with the biotech giant Monsanto creating more and more and more GE seeds and testing them in open fields. I see a dark future if this is not contained in the near future. Even if the soft white wheat farmers win their law suit against Monsanto will it be too late to keep uncontaminated crops?

Will Monsanto in the long run become the real “winner”?  If the GE wheat grows and contaminates all the wheat crops there will be no uncontaminated crops and Monsanto will be able to market the GE wheat ever where. The established laws could be virtually ineffective. Its like trying to collect all the feathers from an opened goose down pillow with the wind blowing the feathers everywhere. It may be technique possible, but unlikely for anyone to collect all of the escaped feathers.

Now is the time to take action vote with your money and/or use your voice against GE (GM or GMO, genetically modified organism) before what others create can not be undone. This is affecting the world, not just one country regardless economic status, race, or culture. It is affecting us all, some more then others.

Be more proactive we can all become just a little bit better and the more likely the negative results in life can be avoided. Stand up tall with an upright posture and be proactive. The solution  helps to keep moving the best direction is to step onto the path of True Health.  Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step on to the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars  company you want to support to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire lifetime  Together we can protect what we have so we don’t need to live in a world that is second rate.
