“Baby formula may kill vs
superior breast milk may create
healthier baby and adults:
Saving $ 3.6 Billion just in the U.S.”

My Story:
My youngest was 3 months old when I had to have an operation. I knew from the research I had done my breast milk was superior to formula. With great effort I was able to come out of the hospital after about a week and continue breastfeeding my baby. This only worked with pumping breast milk, feeding my baby in the hospital when possible and a little bit of formula.
I had to trust the formula would do it’s job. Within 2 weeks all was back to breast feeding my baby. I wanted to do what was best for my children every step of they way just like parents around the world.
Deaths caused by virus in China:
The idea there are major health problems in China may be part of the reason baby formula produced outside the country is a hot commodity.
The Daily Mail (2) reported 20,000 or more of pigs and tens of thousands of ducks and swans were found dead washing up onto riverbanks in China as of March 10, 2013. Some of the dead adult pigs tested positive for PCV-2 which is normally deadly to pig fetuses and young pigs with many people coming to the conclusion that the polluted waters in China may have something to do with the animals deaths. One scientist suggested that the deaths maybe part of the bird flu out break. The question on the minds of many has H7N9 virus has undergone a mutation? The river water’s came out negative when tested for H7N9 virus.
Baby formal deaths in China in 2008:
Parents purchase baby formula in China just like many other parents from around the world. There is good faith the infant formula wouldn't cause their infant to die if consumed and yet it happened. On October 3, 2008 the United States Food And Drug Administration (FDA) (3) reported infant deaths and illness from melamine contaminated infant formula. The Telegraph (1) reported 6 babies died and 300,000 fell ill from this contaminated milk leaving some parents to only trust the name brand baby formulas manufactured outside of China.
More arrest for trafficking “safe” infant formal in China:
Is there more money in infant formula than drug? According to the Telegraph (1) as China’s demand rises for foreign foodstuffs like baby formula which is restricted by a new law is creating over 2 times the arrests for baby formula smugglers than those arrested for the cross-boarder drug traffickers in all of 2012.
The concern over having the best for an infant from the parents may be influenced by the one-child police in China. The guardian (6) tells of 30 years of the strict one-child police in China created in response to the China's population explosion with the population in China growing from about 500 million in 1949 to almost one billion 30 years later.
Growing middle class in China can buy infant formula:
The middle class of China is most likely to continue to grow. Forbes (7) reports of the growing middle class consumers in China in 2011 was estimated to be 300 million Chinese who have disposable income to perchance discretionary items like brand name infant formula from foreign countries like the Untied States.
Breast feeding in China?:
If many of the Chinese parents want the best for their children why aren't they breast feed more instead of buying infant formula? Why is formula so popular when there is a simple solution that protects the baby from contaminated formula and may be superior for the baby’s health as and infant though adult? Breast feeding may have a reduced cost and health benefits above formula fed babies.
Sales of formula in Hong Kong 2012 $678 million:
The USDA’s Global Agricultural information Network (8) details of Hong Kong ‘s infant formula increased by 49% increase in sales totaling US$678 million worth of infant formula sold in 2012. Over 90 percent of the market is dominated by six brands Abbot, Cow and Gate, Friso, Mead Johnson, Nestle and Wyeth with advertising US$97 million.
Breast Feed superior for infant and may save billions:
Benefit's of breast feeding may continue into adulthood:
The Official Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics (OJAAP) tells of the positive effects from breast feeding a child. The human milk is species-specific ( human milk for human infants) and superior for feeding an infant while other prepared infant formulas are markedly different (based on soy, cow, goat, or other) . The Human milk provides added protection from infectious diseases such as bacterial meningitis, bacteremia, diarrhea, respiratory tract infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, otitis media, urinary tract infection, and late-onset sepsis in preterm infants.
Infants fed Human milk have a reduced risk of death by 21% in the United States including some studies finding protection from sudden infant death syndrome (SID) in the first year of life, diabetes mellitus, lymphoma, leukemia, and Hodgkin disease, overweight and obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and asthmain older children and adults who were breastfed vs. non breastfed individuals. Mothers who breast feed also have many heath benefits including a reduced risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
With and added monetary benefit of breastfeeding in the Untied States creating a potential of a decreased in annual health care costs by $3.6 billion.
Vitamin D and breastfeeding:
The CDC also reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) November 2008, recommends that a supplement of 400 IU per day of vitamin d for all breastfed infants. AAP also recommends breastfeeding with the nutrients factor and immune factors recognizing the breast milk hasn’t been found to provide infants with adequate vitamin d intake. Infants are able to syntisies vitamin D. If an infant is deficient in Vitamin d rickets (creating soft bones) could develop including in developed countries.
Final words:
When I had my first child there was no question that I would be breast feeding. The formula companies did what they do best having to create a market promoting the benefits of formula and most likely don't include the list of full differences. China has an emerging middle class with disposable income wanting the best for the one child they are allowed to have with the one child policy. The increasing health issues and past contamination of baby formula in China have created a heavy demand for “safe” infant formula wanting name brand formula manufactured outside the of China. The question I have is why formula to create a healthy baby? Why are Chinese women turning to formula rather then breast feeding.
Breast feeding with a vitamin d supplement gives added benefits infant formula may never be able to match. Selling infant is big business with sales in Hong Kong alone at US$678 million for 2012. They want to sell their formula yet there is no company to make a mistake when breast feeding. I found breast feeding to be convenient and less expensive than formula. Breast feeding may be natures perfect food that might just give parents what they want a healthier baby, with infant formula an emergency backup used if necessary.
The money that is spent on formula and the health benefits might save the United States $3.6 billion to be spent on other areas. The world may have a similar benefit in saving money and helping to save resources.
