“Has technology dumb things down,
lowering IQ by 14 points?”

My Story:
It was the 80’s and when I opened my business I purchased a new phone. It was so cool it could store 10 phone numbers, just push a button and like magic the number was dialed. I could hear the numbers as each one was being entered before the phone line started to ring. At that time I thought it was great and on second thought I thought how will I remember the numbers when I am not using this button on the phone. Just the process of using and older style rotary phone helped me to remember each phone number I dialed often. Could our desire for advancements and the fulfillment of these wants have the negative side effect of less intelligence affecting our societies on a whole?
The Victorian age and automatons:
Queen Victoria, after whom the Victorian era is named.1837 to 1901 |
During the Victorian age 1837 to 1901 named after Queen Victoria, the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1) Many automatons are robot type machines created under the same principles of a wind up watch with many more complex movements came from the Victorian age. The design behind the automatons sometimes were lost when an inventor died according to CBS Sunday Morning (2).
Henri Maillardet created an automation that ended up at the Franklin Institute of Science in 1928. Years passed before it was completely restored unraveling the mystery of it’s maker and the ability to create 4 pictures and 3 poems This creations were one

demonstration of the intelligence and creativity of the time. The questions is were the people of the Victorian age more intelligent and creative then people of today? There is growing evidence this many be true. (3) Henri Maillardet's Automaton at The Franklin Institute Science
Today’s loss of 14 points in intelligent:
A new study (4) that used data from 14 studies measuring the reaction time described in a meta analysis between 1889 and 2004 found a 14 point difference. That is a 1.23 IQ point loss for 14 decades. The authors of the study indicate that this supports the idea the Victorians were substantially more clever than the modern Western populations.
Modern intelligence in robots:
Digital Journal (6) tells of an “intelligent” robotics named Jules invented by the Hanson company that looks like a real human and talks as if it is having a conversation. Some people just don’t understand how things work. It seems the
older a person is more often
(4) Modern day automation "Invertuality: Jules says goodbye..."
choices not to keep up with technology like not having a cell phone, no computer, or don’t text. It seems those who use things as a tool may have an edge. Are the people using the computers as a tool creating more intelligence?
Final words:
In the last three years I changed my life dramatically stepping on to the Path of True Health. Having very different priorities that doesn’t always mean pressing a button to dial a pre programmed number. I have read some very complex studies and information. I more often use the computer for research or writing then passive activities like watching a movie.
Excited about what I learned I would have short conversations with almost anyone I would meet. I found no matter how simple the language it seemed the only people who could understand were those who were like me doing more then just sitting and following directions. For about 20 years I had a lifestyle that seemed to be just following directions.
The people that could understand that gave me hope. The most exciting part is the people who just couldn’t wrap their minds around the ideas in the last few years began to understand the concepts. May be the 14 point loss in IQ will only be a dip in history if we all become a little more proactive.
The more proactive we can all become the more likely the negative results in life can be avoided. Stand up tall with an upright posture and be proactive. The solution helps to keep moving the best direction is to step onto the path of True Health. Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step on to the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars company you want to support to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire lifetime Together we can protect what we have so we don’t need to live in a world that is second rate.
