My Story:
When I was growing up many of the created dangers from companies were overlooked It wasn't until the 70's that I had an idea that companies don't always do what is best for others, but always promote what they are marketing to strengthen their bottom line. The pesticide DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) was ban when I was a teen and the memory of it's long term effect has stayed with me and given me the reality of our choices and some of the effects where I live and others though out the world.
It was one product affecting many, developed by one company. An idea that was meant to create a positive and move to an overall negative. I live in a world to day that I see much of the same pattern being followed. I question the positive effects of the giant, Monsanto. Is the good they claim seems to be out weighed by the negative? The evidence is mounting. Adjustments are needed?
History of DDT:
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (3) In the 1940's he first modern synthetic insecticides was DDT used on crops, livestock and used by business and home use. Starting in the 1950's due to mounting evidence of the harmful effects of DDT the EPA started to control the use of DDT. It wasn't until 1972 a ban was placed on DDT and the EPA issued a cancellation order for DDT. Today the DDT is classified as a carcinogen by the U.S. and international authorities. In the last 40 years the persistence and residues from past use still may be a threat to humans and wildlife.
DDT may be banned but if it is still available to be used it is still a real threat to the world. In September of 2006 the World Health Organization (Who) supports the indoor use of DDT in African countries to help control malaria. Does this out weight the environmental risks or do new ideas of a new solution that helps both to control malaria and doesn't have the negative effect on the environmental need to be investigated? If there is such a large negative effect over long term exposure of DDT which is more of a threat the mosquito carrying malaria or the exposure to DDT?
History of Monsanto:
The beginning of monsanto according to the monsanto website (5) (8) :
the foundation of the company started in 1901. It is responsible for the development of products to help agricultural.
1964 introduction of Monsanto herbicide
Ten years later in 1974 Roundup was introduced (8)
1976 Roundup is commercialized in the U.S.
1981 setup biotechnology and established strategic research focus.
1982 first to genetically modify a seed
1994 Posilac, bovine somatotropin (Bst) for dairy cows sold in the U.S.
1996 first in-seed herbicide tolerance to roundup and other glyphosate based herbicides.
2000 the original Monsanto merged with Pharmacia Corporation (9) a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc.
2001 Monsanto loses lawsuit that Roundup is biodegradable (10) pays a fine of $22,400
2013 cash flow for first half of fiscal year 2013 up to nearly $1.9 billion.
Large corporation, large gross income and large net profits:
According to Yahoo news (7) For the first half of fiscal year 2013, cash flow from operations was a source of nearly $1.9 billion compared to $1.7 billion for the same period last year.
from Yahoo news (7) Monsanto's net sales |
Monsanto sells pesticides, herbicides like Roundup and genetically modified organisms (GMO) like seeds that are roundup ready (can withstand Roundup directly sprayed on the seed). Monsanto has been around for over 100 years making large amounts of profit. Monsanto may have had goals to improve the world with creating more food and better farming practices yet there seems to be problems with what they created. The effects sometimes takes years to see the results.
2 year study from France shows effects of Genetically Modified seed:
French study (6) effects of GMOs Effects on animals |
The major effect of a GMO may not show up in a 90 day study. A recent study out of France (6) shows the effects of a two year exposure of GMO's on rodents. Cuting the rodents life span and developing tumors affecting both male and female mice.
Are the risk worth it?
The scientific evidence is pointing to many health issues. If Monsanto's had to be forced through court to accurately describe the product and independent testing shows possible risk for cancer and a shorter life. Does the company have the best interest in the customer, except selling more product?
Actively trying to change bio companies like Monsanto:
March against Monsanto site (1) states the solutions not just the problem with a worldwide march on May 25, 2013. Voices together help to change the world we live in.
Information from the March against Monsanto site (1):
What are solutions we advocate?
- Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.
- Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.
- Repealing relevant provisions of the US's "Monsanto Protection Act."
- Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.
- Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.
- Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.
- Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won't take these injustices quietly.
We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.
Final words:
Final words:
I look forward to the day if a product is on the market or being introduced to the market extensive testing to indicate there is little risk happens before there is a problem 30 or 40 years lage shows there are true challenges to people, wild animals and the environment. Until then we all must be proactive to understand what we are purchasing. It just might eliminate a risk of cancer or other health issues.
One of the best direction is to step onto the path of True Health. Discover a new world. Help yourself, help the world, step onto the Path of True Health and vote with your dollars which turkey supplier you want to support to create a world you will love to live in. I do, and I like the world I am helping to create. Together we can create a better life for all to remember over their entire lifetime Together we can protect what we have so we don’t need to live in a world that is second rate.
