"Beware of the Blob, not just a bad movie:
Algae + unsustainable farming = death? "
~ Cynthia G. Creel
I thought the Blob was just a bad movie from the 50's, Not so true, it is here and it will stay until we take the time to fight it off, if it is not too late. There is a door of opportunity that is always closing shut. It is creaking as it shuts on it's own and once shut it will never be opened again. $82 million per year is the cost of the Blob, Harmful Algae Bloom, not including the affects of what it does to the animal life and human life, what pain it creates.
What does this have to do with the Big Mac I eat for lunch or the yummy Organic Heirloom tomatoes? All of it our food came from some place with a farmer or large corporation choosing what to put into or on to the soil to create food, Is the farmer using man created combinations of chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus as fertilizer with man made or a natural product? Man's products are a poor replacement for what is already in place in nature with a larger then life effect. Once the blob was only thought up and put into a horror movie and now real life mimics it, oh too well. It is profitability that directs this choice, not need of the body.
According to a study from the Center of Deceased Control and Prevention (CDC) "Algal blooms occur in natural waters used for drinking and/or recreation when certain types of microscopic algae grow quickly in water, often in response to changes in levels of chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, in the water. Algal blooms can deplete the oxygen and block the sunlight that other organisms need to live, and some can produce toxins that are harmful to the health of the environment, plants, animals, and people. Harmful algal blooms have threatened beaches, drinking water sources,"
Another words it is the Algae Blob sucking up all the resources leaving only a path of toxins left for anything it has not smothered off from lack of oxygen. This is not quite the end the toxins can be transported to land, even if by accident, for anyone to eat. Putting us all at risk, animals to man.
So what can I do? I work at knowing where and how my food has been grown. I created By Design Farm, not only to feed my family and others. When I do not have everything I need I look for the local farmer trying to do the same as myself. Only if I can not find it somewhere else I will buy from someone I do not know. I hope more people care enough to spend part of their hard earn money at a local level to help stop the Blob. Every little bit helps us move in the correct direction, forward.
