“Human Rights protects us all from ourselves” ~ Cynthia G. Creel

“Human Rights protects us all from ourselves”

My story:

I felt in my pocket for my money and found only $2. I didn't have a credit card or debit card, all left behind. There was some food at the meeting, but not enough. I felt like a homeless person walking the street, no home, no real money, no access to money, no ID, nothing. Yes , I could have asked some one for a few dollars, but I didn't.

Little in money in my pocket and no access to more until I could get home.  I had to beg for  extra or stand on my own two feet and find a way to eat while I was several hours away from home in San Francisco and only half way thought the day of meeting. I was at a business conference and saw a hamburger for a buck. A whole meal I could eat one now and one on the way home. It was tempting.

Bad for me yes, a little bad won’t hurt. I  rushed over bought the $1 burger asked for some water and found myself an hour later hungry than before and so sleepy I didn’t even care about the meeting, the people, what I had paid to be there to learn. All I could think of was being home where food was. There was no logic left in my brain or a way to retain any information, it was all about me and my need.

By the time the afternoon was over the second hamburger didn't even touch the hunger. I walked by several homeless people and just thought you need to get a job. That was all I could think of, there was no thought, no compassion, no solution, just a desperation on my part that even left out self-compassion. At that moment I couldn't even help myself let alone others.

New day new thought:

Today, I have changed with the world and have become proactive. Learning everything has a connection to everything else. It’s like the 6 degrees game where you can connect a famous person though 6 people and yourself. Even with a couple of dollars I could find a way to feed myself and avoid the roller coaster ride of that day without buying a $1 hamburger.

Final thoughts:

If we do not help ourselves there is very limited ways of helping others. When we loose our human rights by feeling less then human there is no connection to others or their rights. We have lost our connection to ourselves leaving us to live in the dark.

Human rights start with the basics of taking care of yourself and stepping on the Path of True Health. I paid a terrible price that day, I lost more then my money that day. I lost the price of admission, the information presented, the building of a network, a piece of me, my history, part of my poetical, becoming just a little less human.  It was like the perfect storm came and erased the day except the strongest memory of all, how hungry I was and how long it took to fill that need.

Creating Human Rights really protects each of us from ourselves reminding us what is important to one is important to all.
