Telomere? Telo what? Who needs a telomere? I hate those calls at dinner time.
Every cell in the body has a telomere. Telomere is the tip of the DNA allowing the cell to reproduce. (1) A telomere are like a shoelace tip. When new it is nice and tight lots of shoelace to tie. As time takes its toll the ends of the shoe lace can fray and eventually not enough shoelaces to tie and the need arises to buy a new one to hold the shoe on the foot. No problem just a few dollars and the jobs are done.
Unlike shoelaces there is no store to buy a new telomere. Once the telomere is too short the cell self-destructs. This sounds bad, is there hope? Yes, unlike the shoelace the telomere length maybe able increase or decrease depending on what the body has to work with. A new study (2) worked with mice reverses the aging process in mince
The more the body is unhealthy the less likely it will build more telomere the healthier the more likely it will build more telomere The healthier life will be and the younger the body will act, the more that can be done and the better the Path of True Health becomes.
So to say it short and sweet. The longer telomere the more life we have and the better it will be. We only have one life, if we aren't building telomere we are destroying telomere. The choice is yours.
